In the begininng was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God. He was in the begining with God. All things wer made through Him, and without Him nothing was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
John 1: 1-5 NKJV
I came across an interesting thought the other day. Most of us know and admit that our Lord God has been here from the very begining. For He is the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last. The scriptures give us more than a few references for this fact. After all, if God hadn't been there in the begining, we probably wouldn't be here either. With His spoken word, He brought the world into being. However, I will take this one step further and say that Jesus was also there, with God the Father, from the very begining. It is in John 1:1-5 that we learn that Jesus "Was in the begining with God." Two parts of what we refer to as the "Holy Trinity" side by side as the world was spoken into being. Of course, as Jesus told His desciples that if they have seen Him, they have also seen the Father. Jesus, and God, are one in the same.
After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, said, "I thirst!" Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
John 19: 28-30 NKJV
Knowing that Gods word is true and infalable can we, without doubt, believe that as Jesus hung on that Roman cross for our transgressions, that the Father was also there with Him? For if we are to believe that the Father and Jesus are indeed one in the same, then it is not too far of a stretch to realize that the Father was there with the Son as He died. Not only did God give His only begotten Son, but He was with Him each and every step of the way until the bitter end on the hill of Golgatha. I believe that we have made a mistake and seperated Jesus from the Father in this whole process. Yes, the Son came to take away the sins of the world, but that doesn't mean that the Father turned His back on Him in any way. No, for I believe that God the father bled, cried and suffered along with Jesus in this whole ordeal. I've heard it said that as Jesus hung on that cross in agony, that God somehow removed himself from His Son and visited the wrath reserved for us on Him who became sin in our place. The issue I see with this is that it would go against the very love nature of God. We've been hung up for far too long on the "Fire and brimstone" punishment idea of God. Yes, God is disapointed when we do badly, but only because He wants His best for us. The idea that God is all about continuing to punish a sinful human race comes straight from old testament times. For when Jesus gave His life on the cross and rose three days later a few things happened that we need to remember. First, He suffered and bled on the cross so that our sins would be covered forever. No longer would we be under that sin penalty that we keep hitting ourselves over the head with! Second, with His death and resurection, He who became sin in our place ultimately defeated that sin nature that had taken root in the garden of eden once and for all. We are no longer simply sinners saved by grace, but a whole new creation born through the sacrafice of Christ Jesus. Sin, and death, no longer have dominion over we who believe. Instead, we live that joy each day with the realization that Christ is in us.
